Leadership & Me
If you have stumbled across this blog, you are probably wondering a little bit about me and what I will be writing about. My name is Megan and I am currently a Hospitality and Tourism Management Student at SDSU focusing on Meetings and Events. This blog represents my views on leadership and will show my developing beliefs on leadership throughout the semester.
I have portrayed my leadership qualities in various roles over the years including being: a mentor to students through an organization called LEAD (Leadership Extracurricular Academic Difference), the Director of Special Events for MESA (Meetings and Events Student Association), a coach to new employees at the DoubleTree Golf Resort where I currently work, Director of Marketing for a student run concert production business, and a role model to my younger sister.
Although these roles show that I have the ability to lead, I want to focus on the "hidden" traits that make up a good leader. To me, being a leader takes a lot more than just being in charge and physically “leading” people. To be a leader is to inspire. To help others grow. Leadership is to create an impact on those around you so that they aspire to lead by your example.
The people whom I view as great leaders are those who act with kindness and implement love in their leadership. Those who internally make the decision to be a helping hand to those in need and focus on helping others grow rather than only on the self.
It is important to keep in mind that you are constantly setting an example for those around you -- be the role model that you would like others to follow. Not only those whom you mentor or outwardly lead are impacted by your values. I like to be an inspiration to everyone whom I come into contact with, because you never know who is adapting your ways of teaching. That being said, I try to always see the positives in every situation, encourage others to step outside of the “ordinary” comfort zone, and be genuine in all aspects of life.
