Contingency Theories: Part Two

In Collin’s book, “Good To Great”, he emphasizes the value of what it means to be a Level 5 Leader. Level 5 leaders practice personal humility and professional will in every situation. Not many people make it to the executive leadership level, but the ones that do apply situational leadership theories to the way they lead. They not only focus on themselves, but also their followers as well as the specific situation that is at hand. This can be tricky because there are so many different types of people in the world, and each has their own unique ways of learning. It requires someone who has a good understanding of people and can determine based on different circumstances, the type of leadership that each person needs, to grow into the best person that they can become.

In Chapter 6, Collins talks about Level 5 leaders being those who can be responsible and self-disciplined, with a strong will to accomplish their goals. This culture of discipline allows for the rest of the team to be able to rely on their leader to get what they say they will get done, done, so they can focus on their own tasks. An executive leader must be able to apply discipline in all areas of coaching, yet adapt to the company and followers needs.
